Yes, this is exactly it! I find willingness to ignore scientific studies alarming but over-reliance on them alarming, as well. When I was still teaching undergrad, I made a point of drilling into my students the difference between opinion and fact, and how to evaluate a source of information. Being able to discriminate between the two seems to be a lost art these days.
