I worded the poll options on my last thread here as if everybody learned about sex (and more specifically, where babies come from) from their parents. From the responses, not so.
So WHERE did you first learn about the act necessary to produce babies from?
I said a book, but my parents gave it to me so it's kind of both. The book talked about the egg from the mommy and sperm from the daddy come together to make an embryo that grows into a baby inside the mommy, but not how the sperm got there in the first place. I don't know when all the pieces of the puzzle finally fell together but it was probably a combination of parents, books, friends, and school.
Learned it from my mom. I remember that day in fact. I think I was in 4th grade and my brother was in 2nd. She explained how the whole reproduction thing worked, but she also spoke about how sex was recreational and that most of the time couples simply do it for pleasure. She also explained homosexual sex.
Shortly after that, the first American Pie movie came out and she took me, my brother, and my cousin to see it. She was fully prepared for all the questions we would have afterwards. Following that we were all pretty well versed on the subject. lol.
My aunt had her nursing textbooks around the house when I lived with her. Very graphic, and I found the birthing pics disgusting. I still (age 9) wasn't so clear on how the woman got into that situation, but sure didn't want to myself!
I think at age 10 we had that flowery ridiculous "getting your period" movie, which reinforced my sense that none of it was something to look forward to.
I really don't remember when I understood that Part A into Part B made pregnancy, and was a bit older when I understood why someone would enjoy that, either part.
Supposedly my parents explained it to my older sister and assumed that she would tell me, well, she sure didn't. She got Pg at an early age for bad reasons, so I guess she couldn't use the knowledge that she had, whereas I would have walked through fire to avoid pregnancy as a teenager.
I voted books also. But even if it wasn't actually that, I grew up on a farm. Kinda difficult to not put 2 and 2 together when it's right out there and obvious to see.
It was a running talk starting when i was young until i hit my teens basically. Anytime i had a questions,my parents would give me an answers to what i asked. Basically they let all of us kids determine the pace at which we learned. Of course my brothers showed little interest oddly and had to be sat down at 10 and told.
When I was about 5 or 6 I asked my mother where I came from. She told me "God planted a seed in my heart and you grew from that." (This was about 1940.) I wasn't satisfied with that answer so I asked my older sister, who was 8 years older. She told me the same thing. I didn't really believe either one of them but after I got old enough to read and understand a dictionary, I started looking up relevant words--maybe about 10. One word led to another and after awhile I had a pretty clear picture of the whole process. So I checked "books".
My answer is not in the poll. I have no idea where I learned since I don't remember ever NOT knowing. It was just like knowing that water came from the faucet or that dinner is served each night. You just know.
