What does the wife MEAN by "son, you should go and have fun at your age" - ? What is FUN to her?
Apparently, parties and bars. Alcohol and possibly drugs.
And sex under the influence. With a possibility of knocking up a girl.
Seems like she is forcing him to repeat her path of young parenthood.

Look, there are NO perfect parents out there. We have all made mistakes, especially with our first child since we don't have any experience with child raising and the issues we will encounter. If you feel it's ok for your son to have an occasional beer at 18 in the privacy of his home and he will not be driving afterward, that's your choice. Drinking age when I was a kid was 18, and there were plenty of 18 year olds getting drafted and going to war, so it's not like he's some little child.

But to give someone else's child alcohol is setting yourself up for trouble, since it is illegal. As usual, your wife's desire to party with the kids is very immature and you shouldn't have gone along with it just to please her. It's going to be very difficult to always be the mature one until she makes some changes in her mindset.
And this is going to involve you being the main parental figure 24/7. It sounds like you are (for the most part) doing a great job, especially since habits that have been unchecked for so long are hard to break. The drinking thing (of the girlfriend) was a slip up, and fortunately it didn't' end badly. But I certainly would NEVER allow it to happen again.

That's what worries me

Moderator Cut. The important thing is that him and his son continue therapy to learn to deal with this. It would be great if she went too, but I have doubts on her continuing it. She seems to do it to accomplish something, and doesn't want to face her demons head on just yet.

Then tell her that - maybe she can't finish the logical thought.
And say that she'd be grandma soon.

It's just an affirmation of her lifestyle back then.

They need an intervention, but what kind I'm not sure.

Apparently you didn't mind it too much back then.

Look, you have not really mentioned "partying" as something she still does. If there are substance issues involved, you need to encourage her to tackle that first.

No substance issues. Its just that when she drinks ( which has decreased over time) she really drinks and drinks a lot.
