I'm going to go ahead and assume that Boy Scouts were properly prepared for the temperatures, including specially made sleeping bags and clothing.

If they can't keep the buildings warm enough for students then they'll need to drain the pipes, etc. It would be a disaster!

Prepared, yes.

Specially made bags, etc? Not really. We layered what we owned to provide enough warmth. But, then, we were out for over 48 hours, not 20 or so minutes.

The point is these temperatures are abnormal for the areas being discussed. If you think boy scouts going for a camping trip is the same as school students going to school, I think you are comparing apples and oranges.

I don't think its the same. That was my point. 48 hours at -20 is MUCH tougher. If scouts can make it for 48 hours at -20, 20 minutes or so at about 0 shouldn't be much of a challenge. Why does the school need to close?

You are comparing a troop of 20 boys with 200,000 children?

Not all children have access to school buses and those kids often walk to school. And many of those children don't have an uber Patagonia down jacket. When the authorities are recommending people stay indoors for their safety I'm assuming they know what they're talking about.

Also worth bearing in mind that many schools have no heated, indoor area for children to wait before school starts in the morning.

If Nashville, TN had zero degrees they probably ought to cancel classes because too many kids would be unprepared. Wind is another factor. People in Maine understand that the north wind is cold no matter what direction it comes from.

Back in the 1800s the mountain men had spring rendezvous at the headwaters of the Missouri River. There was a big stump where the Mountain men would tell tall tales and great adventures. The greatest mountain man of all was Jim Bridger. He stepped up on the stump and I'll paraphrase;

"I ain't afeared of Sioux, Crow or Payute.
I ain't afeared of grizzer bears, pumas or gila monsters.
I ain't afeared of Modocs, Cheyenne or Payutes.
Is only one thing I'm afeared of."

A hush came over the crowd.

"I'm afeared of a cold wind."

The crowd murmured in agreement. The only way to survive a cold wind is to get out of it and on the open plains the Indians always camped in a grove of trees or on the lee side of a riverbank.

Actually, I do. I volunteer at the local homeless shelter. Are you saying poor people dont have a car? Most here do... Or that poor people cant get the time off to wait with their kid at the bus stop? Arent they more inconvenienced by having to take the entire day when the school closes?

Why should schools be closed for the minority that have an issue? They could just as easily be excused.

No, I was showing the ability of people to stay out in the cold for prolonged periods without any special equipment.

How long is the walk to school for the unbussed kids? My kids arent bussed. They walk about 25 minutes, one way. They tell me they are walking further than any of their friends. If im concerned about the weather I either make sure they dress well, or give them a ride. Life goes on regardless of somewhat cold temperatures.

Schools dont have a heated area indoors? Most schools around here have heated cafeterias, many also have gyms on top of that. Not to mention halls. Are schools elsewhere lacking cafeterias and halls?
