At what age would you MAKE your child get a job? And at what age (if any) would you kick them out?

This is not a one size fits all question. There are too many variables that can come into play. If my child had graduated high school and had no intention of continuing his or her education, getting a job would come at 18. Given that scenario I think I would begin to insist they move out between 22-25.

If they graduated from college and were unable to immediately find work, I would give them a couple of years to get established.

The key for me and my husband would be that they had a realistic plan in place to become self-supporting and were making progress in that direction.

I dont know what prompted this question but as for me, as soon as I finished college, i enrolled into a masters program. My parents helped me pay the tuition but I worked part time to be able to afford the boarding/books/living expenses etc. This will probably what my kids will do too.

My parents were pretty insistent that I get a part time job as soon as I was old enough to, which was in high school. My sisters and I all worked during high school in addition to activities we did through school. We've all been employed consistently since the age of 14 (12 in my case).

Yeah, I started young... I was cleaning for a couple in my neighborhood every Saturday. It was a pretty sweet gig, actually, they paid me in cash and I was getting about 30% over minimum wage at the time. When we moved, my next job did not pay so well (McDonald's where I started when I was 13). I've only been unemployed for 4 months since I started working. Those 4 months were pretty fabulous, actually. I was 28 when that happened.

I was delivering newspapers and cutting lawns at 14 back in the early 1980's. However, I definitely think they should start in high school. It is possible for them to work and go to school at the same time. Teaches them responsibility early in life. I think starting after college is TOO LATE.

My kids have been working since age 14. They will continue to work when they enter college this fall.

Nowadays, 20 is way too late.
