My husband's mother (now deceased) had six "blood" grandkids out of her six kids (all born in the 50's); and my mother has four "blood" grandkids out of her five kids (born 1953-64, although one died at age 21 without having kids).
From what I know of others in my age group and who are part of the middle class, that is very typical. In fact, I don't personally* know any middle-class person over the age of 40 who has more than three kids, and the great majority of them have one or two. However, all the women that I personally* know in the lower socioecondomic class had at least one kid before the age of 21, and all of those who are now in their 40's have at least three kids. Of course, that is just my experience, but I definitely agree that the surest way these days to having a life of poverty is to have children while one is very young.
*"Personally" meaning someone with whom I have more than just a very casual acquaintance

Most people in my family have three to four kids. We're a pretty prolific bunch. This includes the youngest generation of childbearing age. I'm surprised at how many of them, including two of my four kids, have four children each.
