Thanks for all the input. I know it was a strange question. But, understandably a lot of parents are worried about H1N1. Many of our friends are skipping trick-or-treating this year because of it.
And yes, my wife is a bit of a germaphobe, but a cute one!
Happy Halloween!
Sounds like your wife has OCD.
I have OCD to with some things but passing out candy wouldn't bother me.
Just buy all packaged candy (no loose candy- most parents probably wouldn't let their kids eat loose candy anyway) and then you or your wife just reach in to pass out the candy to the treaters- should be fine.
Actually, it's not a bad idea. I saw a news segment his morning discussing this very thing, about spreading the H1N1 thru trick or treat. They did suggest the giver drop candy in the bag, and not a bad idea to use a scoop to do it.
My wife is thinking about using a big kitchen ladle to scoop out Halloween candy from our big candy bucket instead of having the kids reach in.
She thought that this would help reduce the germ cesspool in the candy bucket to help protect the kids from each other's germs, especially H1N1. Of course, this could all be undone by going to the next house.
Is this overboard?
Where I come from kids are holding onto their bags with both hands and the adults just drop one candy into each bag. That's how I have always done it.
Uhhhh....no my wife does not have OCD, but she is a microbiologist and is very well aware of communicable disease and simply wanted to "protect" kids from other kids' germs.
Wow...such criticism one receives one one actually tries to be considerate of others!

If your wife uses her hands to put the candy into the bags, she's not exposing the kids to other kids' germs.
So, I'll ask again---doesn't your wife trust the cleanliness of her own hands?

Even you thought it was overboard. Afterall, you started a thread. Remember, you stated that it was illogical (i.e., would all be undone at the next house.)
