The "pinkification" of girls' toys is damaging their development, according to a mother who has called for a boycott of The Early Learning Centre, the retailer she claims is the worst offender.
Rows upon rows of pink musical instruments, dressing-up outfits, and pretend kitchens are encouraging an "obsession with body image, which starts younger and younger" and makes girls think "beauty is valued over brains".
Ah heck... let's just get rid of every color! Give the kids monochromatic toys! Let's find a happy medium.... GRAY! There nobody will feel the least bit gender stereotyped with GRAY.... I now demand all toys be GRAY!!!! Get rid of ALL THE COLORS!!!! They make my kids have an obsession with HAPPINESS! Jeepers this woman is insane......
The boycott excessive, but I do wish toy companies (and worse, the kids clothing companies) weren't so oriented towards pink. It's not such a big deal with the toys, but having tried to buy clothes for a niece it's frustrating that so many clothes are in pink and/or have embroidered with things like "princess" or "sweetie" or "cupcake" and the like. Not that there aren't options out there, of course, but I can see why this parent got fed up that gender roles are being established so early on. The more expensive companies seem to overall have more choices of colors.
Personally, I find it a huge marketing ploy in which some fall for it and others don't. Pink lawnmowers, pink carseats and pink vacuum cleaners are a little much, but I wouldn't buy those items even if I had a girl.
It's about money & profit, not obsession over body image.
Companies have figured out some parents and some grandparents will sell out big bucks for a pink tool set. That is all that it is about.
I have two girls who are still sitting in booster seats... they got to pick out their own- guess what color they chose? PINK (and they were actually the same price as the drab gray or blue ones)

Here's an idea.....why doesn't this mother put HER money where her mouth is and open her own store, no pink allowed.
