Help! Any day now, my wife will give birth to our first child together (she has a 12 year old from previous marriage) and I have NO IDEA what to expect. Everyone is saying things like "you'll know what to do" or "just do what comes naturally". I have no idea what this means. Im not as bad/whiney as Scott Baio, but Im not too far off from what he was like on his show. Are my days of golfing, going to the gym, training/teaching martial arts until midnite gone? Someone once told me that the instant your child is born, there is an "automatic rewiring" of the circuits in the brain (for men) that renders almost everything else in the world secondary to your child.

We have what I think are all the essentials - bugaboo stroller, crib, infant car seats, bottles, video monitor, a gazillion clothes/outfits, bouncer, and swing. Is there anything else that one needs?

Just never been so nervous and excited about anything ever. Any advice comments will be greatly appreciated.

For the first two to three months your life will totally revolve around the little one and its schedule. After that the baby should start to find his or her own schedule with sleeping and eating and it won't be quite so rough. (Also at this point you do find you can function on three straight hours of sleep instead of 8 LOL).

Congratulations on your impending arrival. You will find your way....

Just thought to add you didn't put diapers on your list.

I knew i was forgetting something. Better go out now to stock up on diapers. Everyone's telling me that a good nights sleep will just be a distant memory. Better enjoy sleeping now while I can.

Thank you so much for responding. Im just getting overwhelmed with the anticipation of birth.

Your life as you know if is about to end....

Some men have a hard time adjusting to a new born. They can't breast feed, so it's hard to know what to do. On top of that, they are suddenly not the center of this woman's world anymore.

But it's hard not to be completely mesmerized by a tiny little baby.

Congratulations! LOL - you sound like me, except I'm the one delivering! When is your wife due?

I wouldn't stock up on diapers just yet. You don't know what your baby will fit into best (brand or size-wise). When you're at the hospital, everytime they bring that cart in, take whatever's in it and stash it away (this is the advice I've received from moms & nurses in post-partum).

Enjoy the experience!

That is always the best and worst part the anticipation. Yep sleep is a huge commodity but worth it in the long run. My youngest just turned three and is finally becoming a little person who can hold conversations and express his opinions. (Not that I always want to hear them lol) Enjoy your little one because they grow up so fast.

thought of something else...a little bathtub...they make life a little easier.

Just don't drop the baby.

And don't let it's head go flop.

Her supposed due date is March 15th, but her stomach has gotten very low within the past couple days.

I saw this poor new father in a restaraunt on Saturday and the guy was really struggling with holding and placing the baby in the stroller. The grandfather who was with them said "Just give me the baby" and did everything. Poor dad looked at my wife and I and said "Your time will come.....your time will come".

Wow...coming up!

You know what's funny about that grandfather? He was probably JUST like the young dad during HIS first time.

Those 1st couple of months your life will revolve around your little bundle...but once you guys get into a routine, you will get your life back...and you need to remember to let your wife have the same. But yes, your life is going to be a little chaotic in the begining...Just be there for your wife. When you see she is crumbling or on the verge of a crying breakdown, she needs a little break.

But don't fret. Your life is not over by any means...

You need to remember that these little babies are only this little one time. And it is for a very short time so enjoy every second of it...there might be some hard seconds but just try to enjoy this journey your about to take.
