I am a preschool teacher and one of my former students(I had him last Year) will not potty train. I saw his mom yesterday-she has tried hot wheels , candy etc -her first one was a girl and trained at 2 years 2 months- she said he does not care- any suggestions-I told her it may be closer to 3 1/2- Help my friend please!!
The average age for a boy to be potty trained is close to 4, tell your friend not to stress about it, he will do it when he is ready.
My son was the same, it was extraordinarily frustrating. I did several things which she can try, but my son decided when he was ready, which unfortunately was over the age of 4. My daughter however saw everything I was doing with my son, got it, and was trained at 17 months. Go figure.
I put my son in underwear, told him he was done with diapers and that was that. I figured he wouldn't like the way it felt. This did work for #1 not #2
Put his favorite candy on the back of the potty, every time he goes, he gets a treat
Put him on the potty every 1/2 hour
Find out where he does #2, my son always went in the same corner. I put the little potty there for him to encourage him to go. When we were outside, his favorite place was to go in the back of the truck, go figure.
Needless to say most kids do it when they are ready, not when you are ready. It si frustrating as anything, but it will soon be a distant memory. Looking back, I laugh because everyone told me this, I thought they were nuts
Some kids are not ready to potty train fully till 4 or after. Damn it people, get with it. Stop expecting every kid to just conform to your 'stupid schedules' and 'agendas.'
My son was 4 before he was full potty trained.
As for the child in question here....
It's not tragic. If he can't go to THAT preschool find another.
Take the pressure off the kids, please. Some kids are ready at 2 some not till older.
August is a long way away yet. He'll be ready when he's ready....For both my kids (one girl and one boy) - it way literally overnight. I had them help choose "big girl/boy" underwear with characters and every morning when changing them, I would casually ask if they thought they might want to try the big girl/boy underwear today...If they said no, I just said OK and put on the diaper. Eventually, they said yes and that was that.

Girls and boys train differently. I cannot figure out how parents don't get that fact & need to compare. Even children of the same sex train differently b/c they are, surprise surprise, their own person!!!
Also, not sure why parents use 1,265 different methods in a month time period and wonder why their child is not "cooperating".
It's not bribery. It's a need.
He'll learn when he is ready. Mom needs to stop trying to cater to supposed needs & get some confidence and consistency. August is 8 months away. In toddler time, that is huge.
The comment "He doesn't care." He's 3, not 24. It's not HIS "fault" at this age & mom doesn't need to protray that it is.
If there is a dad or an older male in the home have him take the boy in with him to the bathroom when he needs to go and have him show the boy how it's done. She might also look at getting the kid a step stool so that he can reach the toilet easier. (We had our son help make his step stool and he was so proud of it that he loved using it) She might also get one of those seats that fit on the toilet seat rather than a potty chair.
I know it's more sanitary for boys to sit rather than stand, but if it helps him become potty trained who cares. The mess can always be cleaned up after he is done.
This is how my son was potty trained and he was between 2 and 3 yo.

My boys weren't ready to potty train until they were 3 1/2. But once they were ready, training went fast. Poop took a little bit longer, but not much longer, maybe a couple of months. Looking back, I think they were both trained by the time they were 3 3/4, but just barely.
Thanks-I told her just to lay off and wait until this summer
