Set up rules for the babysitter to follow that follow your own rules. Would your son normally be in bed well before 11:30p? Then the sitter should be instructed accordingly.

Our usual babysitter is 15 and does a great job. She lives in the neighborhood, so her parents are nearby for backup if something unusual should arise (and, of course she has our contact info always). Our 5&7-YO boys enjoy spending time with her and basically respect her as an adult.

I think it really depends on the maturity of the individual. Our's at 15 is the honor society type and is very responsible and "grown-up" for her age. I don't think 15 would be old enough for many kids to babysit...others might be able to handle it a little bit younger.

I'll have to say though...12 would be a bit too young for me personally regardless of maturity. At 12, I was a pretty mature kid but I don't remember being left alone without an adult in shouting range with their eyes/ears open.

I was babysitting toddlers and infants at 12 for pay, and I'm a guy!

And this was pre-cell phones so it really was all on me to handle any emergencies.

Hello i think that 11 yrs of age is enough to babaysit even though they might hit there siblings or yell occasionally they are very responsable when they are left alone with child and/or a brother or sister because that is there blood and they would die for them and it will increase there responsabilitie. so an 11 yr old should be able to watch a child 7 and under!
