The other day my family wanted to do something outside. It was a gorgeous day, not real hot, perfect for a walk. But where? Well, we've been here many times, but thought we'd go again. Thought I'd share some photos from the site we took during our walk.

We start our journey on the remnants of the south abutment of the South Fork Dam. Looking across the gap (that used to be the dam) you can see the fence on the remnants of the north abutment. We're actually standing on the road that went across the dam to Unger's house, the caretaker. Then we wind our way to the bottom of the former lake bed.

Default More Pics...

Continuing on our journey...

We're at the bottom of the former lake bed looking up ... about 70 feet up. In the background of a couple pics, you can see US Rte 219. The north abutment is to the far right of the pic .. the wooden fence in all the trees. We wind our way back up then got in the car and drove ~ 1 mile upstream and up the hill to the clubhouse and cottage of the former South Fork Fishing & Hunting Club. And to think, the edge of the former Lake Conemaugh used to be not far from the steps of these buildings... they were lake-front property.

Oh, bless you, Mams ... How timely of you to post these pix!! We're going to Johnstown next month for my aunt's 90th birthday party (shhhh ... don't tell anyone, it's a surprise!!). I may be able to use these pix to coerce ... erm, convince ... the spouse to come along and turn a family party into a weekend getaway.

Beautiful pictures! I want to spend a weekend vacationing in the Laurel Highlands next year so I can finally visit Fallingwater (Frank Lloyd Wright's home), the Horseshoe Curve near Altoona, and learn more about the Johnstown Flood. Did you know that there's still a tax on the books on alcohol in the state that supposedly funds reconstruction for the victims of the Johnstown Flood? Most others didn't either until it was unearthed by a politician who wants to divert the funding to help fund capital improvement projects in PA cities and boroughs with a lot of tax-exempt properties.
