USAA is great - if you have the military connections required to unlock its best features. If you don't it isn't any better or worse than other online banks, Ally, Schwab, Fidelity, etc.

I've read that even if you qualify for the Deposit@Home or Deposit@Mobile where you can deposit checks using either your scanner or iPhone, that USAA will place a 5-day hold (but releasing the first $100 immediately). The whole idea behind depositing using these scanning methods is that the funds are supposed to show up in the account immediately, or used to be.

I currently use USAA and I like it. I have a cash back debit card which puts a little something in my account when statement time rolls around. Also I get other banks' ATM fees refunded. I don't qualify at Deposit@home/mobile so that can be bad. You can also have premade deposit envelopes ordered which allow you to mail checks in and they show within 3 days. Also USAA is rolling out a feature where you can deposit some personal checks at some UPS stores using only your debit card.

Their banking is solid IMO. Free checking account with no min balance, free checks, reimburse ATM fees so no looking for your bank's ATM. Credit card is no annual fee, low rate, and reward cash or other options I think travel not sure. Their CD rates are always competitive.

Their mutual fund family is pretty limited compared to the Vanguard/Fidelity/Schwab types, cheap expense ratios but way too many holes in their offerings for anyone but the most basic of investors.

USAA is great. I've just finished switching over all of my DDs from wells.
