I don't understand all the hostility over people paying with checks at the grocery store. Even in the boonies where I live the grocery store has automated check writing machines built into the registers. You pull your check out of the book, hand it to the cashier, they put it in a machine which fills all the fields in about 2 seconds, the cashier puts the check on the counterette for your signature, and you're on your way. Doesn't really take any longer than processing a credit or debit card payment.
I rarely pay with a check anymore, but I have no problem with the people that do. Many people find it easier to be disciplined about their spending if they use a checkbook over a debit card.

I have never seen such a device, and I live in a town of 300k people, which isn't exactly the boonies. Of course, I don't write checks, but I've worked retail and we didn't have those, and I've never seen a cashier do that for any check writers in line in front of me.
I don't really have a problem with people who write checks. But I agree it is annoying when they literally take 5 minutes after the cashier is finished, because they have to find their checkbook and then find their pen, and then they only write one or two words per minute.
I almost felt like asking her if she paid for her car with a check!
ummm since car dealerships (around here, anyways) won't let you pay with a debit or credit card (for a car, im sure for repairs, etc you can), unless you have that much cash on you, or are getting a loan.... you have to write a check.
Although, we learned that the hard way when we bought our last car. Went to the dealership (had already picked out the car) and hubby had to run home to get the checkbook, cause we only had our cards! (we were paying 'cash', no loan) LOL

They have those around here. All the grocery stores and wally world. I don't have a debit card or ATM. No intention of getting either. My credit card is for unexpected expenses, which does not include groceries. I usually pay cash, occasionally by check, which I can write faster than the checker can bag.
Of course, once we resort to using checks again, the banks will charge per check. I'm not sure how a debit transaction can be limited when the funds are available. I just dread grocery shopping again if I have to wait for those check writers.
I never gave mine up and I have free checking.
There is also the option of cash you know.
Amen, brother! I don't know why people are so averse to using cash, which to me is the easiest and most convenient way to live. I get $400 at a time out of the ATM which lasts me two weeks or more, and I use it for all gas, groceries, restaurant meals, and many other purchases. If something is going to be two or three hundred dollars, I whip out my credit card then pay the bill in full each month. Cash is also more efficient; you know it costs the merchant 3% every time a credit card is used. Check writing is time-consuming and cumbersome.
I use my debit card as a credit card to avoid pin,I have free ATM in USA plus free checking.I can also deposit etc. Live in FL credit union in CO,been a member for 40 years, never a problem. Can look back a year on account, what else could you ask for.

No need for checks or debit cards. Just carry a credit card and pay off your balance each month. Debit cards are less secure anyway; if someone gets a hold of your number, they are directly draining your bank accounts. I'd rather contest false charges with a credit card company.
Some places don't take checks anymore. It would be interesting to see this come full circle, since Debit cards were supposed to make everything easier, cheaper, and more efficient. I think they do so I'm not seeing the problem here....but then what do I know.
My parents, who are in their 80's, still writes checks for everything. A few times they have wanted something, a service or subscription, and were told they HAD to have it set up on a CC to renew each month. They really hated that.
I would too. I know several people who don't have credit cards. I'm with happyTexan. Money is still the best.
