So I need to amend my 2011 tax return. This April I sent in my amended return to both the IRS and Maryland, and assumed I was all good. A while later I got a letter from MD saying that they'd received it and to expect it to be processed in 8 to 12 weeks. I foolishly assumed the IRS had gotten theirs as well.
Apparently not. After a good six weeks I checked the "Where's My Amended Return" tool on the IRS website and there was no record of it. I called, sat on hold for an incredibly long period of time, and was eventually told that there was no record of it. O-kay. I sent in another copy. There's still no record of it in the IRS system, and the post office tracking record shows it bouncing around somewhere in zip code 64121 (Kansas City, where it needed to go). I requested a return receipt; it still hasn't come back to me in the mail although the item was theoretically delivered a week ago.
I have no idea what to do. Does the Kansas City IRS center exist in some kind of alternate hell dimension? Should I send in YET ANOTHER RETURN, only this time use FedEx? Wait for the IRS to send me a deficiency notice and then send them all the paperwork while explaining that I had already tried to file it twice? I feel like I'm going crazy. All I want to do is amend my return, but there seems to be this mythical firewall around where I need to send it.
The normal processing time is 8-12 weeks and it is always towards the full amount around April 15. Refund 1040s have first priority on time and with the sequester, even less work time than normal is available. You state you sent in an amended return in April. It has only been 8 weeks and is way too soon to follow up.
ps: I worked these issues for decades. If it is a refund 1040X, when 12 weeks has passed, call.
If you owe and have paid, just wait on it.
