So, wrote a check to my cleaner, who left with it, and then called me back 20 mins later to see he has lost the check. I called the bank to stop it, and the rep then tells me that they advise we change our joint checking account number because if someone finds the check - it has our routing number/acct number on it, so they can do a bunch of stuff using that info - open up a paypal account, pay bills etc.

What should I do??? We have online bill pay set up, boxes of checks . it is not super easy changing account number - we would have to change everything.

Any thoughts? Thanks for opinions.

That sounds like the knee-jerk reaction of a bureaucrat. People write hundreds of checks to the 'butcher, baker and candlestick maker' without worrying that someone is going to find some way to misuse the routing information written on every check. The fact that this particular check has been 'lost' is irrelevant beyond this particular check. Ask to speak with the bank rep's supervisor and get a more sensible response.

Your cleaner could have done all that, too, if he hadn't lost the check.

This would mean that ANYONE to whom you've written a check could "open up a Paypal account, pay bills, etc." I would be concerned about the lost check (since someone could fill out that specific check and try to cash it) but not about the checking account. Just MONITOR it.

They are write, the numbers are at the bottom. It sucks, but I would recommend that you change it.

Numbers are at the bottom of every check you write and anyone can see them so no, they are not "write". Just stop pay the check and forget about it.

They aren't write or right.

As somoene already stated, lost or not, the person holding the check already has that info. Should the OP change her account every time she writes a check?

Chances are, the Stop Payment fee will be larger than the amount of the lost check.
