My daughter is single, with child, no job for all of 2017. Her baby daddy is claiming baby..Does my daughter have to file taxes, as she does get state/federal help?
Please dont ask specifics, as that is all I need to know, is if she needs to file each year regardless of work, and that fact she gets SNAP/EBT and WIC.

She has no taxable income so does not have to file.

The answer is probably no, I am not familiar with the benefits. In general the states will send out a 1099 form telling you of taxable income. I assume you have received none so this would also support a no.

However she may be entitled to some benefits that are related to filing. I would go to the IRS site and look for free filing software and complete the form. If she gets no benefits then do not file. I would not hire someone to do the taxes.

Thanks. We received any forms.
I went ahead and went through an entire taxslayer filing system. With no income, she gets no DIC, even though she has a dependent. So, I am not going to file for her, on her behalf as I normally do.
She is going to have her boyfriend file and claim the baby, we shall see what happens..

To elaborate a little more. She does not and needn't file a federal return. Some states have refundable credits that she may be eligible for. In NJ, my state, she would be eligible for up to $50 (18%) in a property tax credit for renters if she pays rent in non government sponsored housing. I do not know what other states offer.

If she has filed in the past don't be surprised if you get a letter from the IRS. Just answer it and do not worry. They have no way of knowing that this year she does not have to file.

I will let her freak out for a while. Maybe make her go to IRS bldg and ask what she needs to do. You know, be a 27 year old adult..

Sometimes it’s the teachers fault as much as it is the students.

In regards to the father of the child. Can he legally claim the child? He doesnt support the baby at all, no place to live, food, clothing, insurance. Nothing.
She gets medicaid, snap and wic. When you fill out the forms for these, you cant have his income on there, as it puts you above the financial need limit, and would get rejected.
I cant find any law saying he cant, but seems a little shady.

There most certainly is a law.
One must provide more than 50% of support in order to claim someone as a dependent.
He'd be getting a break on his taxes without having earned it if he provides nothing.
