Lots of stress about money problems does cause a lot of splurge spending just to keep the depression at bay...Do think choosing a place to rent on the bus line, do not have own vehicle and your job is within easy walk of bus or housing go the farthest poor...There are still medical bills and choice to have children that will greatly stress your finances, but we don't have so much of a say in this. At least discounted/free meals at school and assistance for low-income students have help with school fees, thrift store toys/clothing but welfare misses needs of offspring by a mile such as clothing, diapers, adequate foods...WIC is almost a joke. Birth control is not always easily accessible either and relationships almost required to manage the cost of housing yourself...

this is a concept many just do not get .

they never take control of their lives . they just float like a cork bobbing in water and where ever life drags them is where they stay .
then thy have a list of excuses as to why they have to stay there .

The one form of birth control that is 100% effective is also 100% free.

If you can't afford to support yourself, don't have children (or pets). If you can barely afford to support the children (or pets) you have, don't add anymore. No one 'needs' to have another mouth to feed..two legged or four.

It's not up to the govt to control your family size, subsidize your income, put food on your table, clothes on your back or a roof over your head. That's YOUR job.

( when I use the term 'you' I am not referring to you personally)

...and Medicaid will happily pay for the doctor visit to get an Rx for dirt cheap birth control.

Poor people are poor because they make bad decisions. Among the bad decisions are hooking up with loser guys, getting pregnant, and then having the loser guy vanish from the scene. Single mother with zero job skills. Instant poverty. Unfortunately, the only way to stop this is to have harsh penalties for making these kinds of bad decisions. The 50+ years of LBJ Great Society public policy has done nothing but reward these bad decisions. We need to make it very unpleasant to make those bad decisions. You want public assistance? Fine. It's a dorm room with common bathrooms, a cafeteria, and a bus pass.

there are no laws , rules or courts in place to protect folks who make bad decisions and play house together instead of marriage . having kids out of wedlock rarely ends well financially .

Why would you think it's governments (tax payers job) to provide all these things? People, use common sense and not have kids they can't afford to support. It's selfish and to expect other to pay for the results of common sense is pathetic.

WHAT? Having children is a choice. Have them IF you can afford to provide everything they need. Otherwise, you become a child abuser IMO.

I feel like this thread has gone off track a little into a "rah-rah-rah, pull yourself up by your bootstraps and quit making bad financial decisions" direction that is a little, eh,...stilted and typical.

I think I understand where Piff was coming from with his original post. There is a certain frustration and genuine lack of opportunity to "get ahead" these days, particularly among the younger generations who've inherited a world that is, by most people estimates, not nearly as rosy as the one their parents inherited. The gulf between the haves and the have-not's is wide and getting wider. Not saying it's hopeless yet, but I understand the sentiment.
