I’m someone that retired extremely early - I have plenty of time, but really have no desire to travel much. I’ve been told that I’m mmissing out.
How much do you spend on travel? Do you wish you could travel more? Has spending more on travel opened you up to liking it more?
I also don’t care about travel, doesn’t really interest me. But my wife is obsessed with travel. So this year alone it’ll be about $18,000 maybe? Mainly that’s a delayed honeymoon and we collected about $12,000 that wasn’t our money so that helps a lot. Because normally speaking way way less than that. But probably doing London / Scotland next year and I bet that’ll run $10-12K.
We can’t really afford to travel much now, and we don’t really care. We took a lot of nice vacations when we were younger, so things like cruises and beaches hold no allure.
Every few years, we spend the big bucks on a vacation to somewhere we haven’t been. Last time we went on a tour of Great Britain. It was about $8000. I’d still like to see a few more places in Europe, like Scandinavia, and I wouldn’t mind seeing Alaska either.
Basically, we allow ourselves about $5k-$10k a year on a splurge. Sometimes it’s travel, but usually it’s not.
It isn’t really about spending more to enjoy it more, as I typically travel to relatively inexpensive places.
Travel is about enjoying the entire experience. Seeing sites you would never have encountered, eating new food, speaking to different people, engaging in fun activities.
If you never want to eat anything other than cheeseburgers, don’t see the point in going to events other than local sporting events, aren’t bothered that you have never seen exotic plants and animals, and have no desire to see the pyramids or whatever, then travel may not be for you.
For myself, I remember the time I went to a pub in Yorkshire and had wide ranging conversations with the locals I met over a pint, hiking through the jungles of Costa Rica seeing sloths and monkeys, touring temples in Bali, eating amazing food in a vineyard in Tuscany, seeing originals by Bernini, etc.
If that doesn’t interest you, stay home and take an fternoon nap.
I'm single and average about $20K/year. Typically that's two major trips and if the flight is long-haul it's in Business Class. I'm doing more organized tours and cruises but I prefer VERY small groups- I use UnCruise, with ships carrying fewer than 100 passengers, and Overseas Adventure Travel, with around 12 people on the tour. Those are for more remote areas; I plan to go to Munich for a few weeks on my own this fall and just explore independently.
Other trips- the occasional family wedding, Chicago with my granddaughters. I started taking the older one when she was 4 (ORD is a one-hour flight from their home) and now her little sister will come with us in the fall. I also schedule a long weekend at my favorite B&B in Hermann, MO where I can bicycle the Katy Trail.
I'm very good with using miles and hotel points but it's not as easy to rack them up since I no longer fly on business!
Travel has ALWAYS been a passion and my late husband shared it- we lived (and I live) very modestly in other aspects of life that are less important. I consider myself very fortunate.
