At the time the Constitution was being drafted, most American newspapers were far more partisan than they are now, and we had a partisan press up until the late 19th century, when the rise of mass media (cheap, advertiser-supported newspapers primarily) led publishers and the profession in general to develop the notion of "objectivity" in news reporting.

But even then, newspapers still ran editorials that espoused particular points of view.

And today, the biases show more in which stories are emphasized and which are de-emphasized than in how the stories themselves are written or reported. The Wall Street Journal is famous for the dissonance between the reporting in its news pages and the stance of its editorial and Op-Ed pages.
I agree, and I didn't mean that there was some formal constitutionally bound charge. News was meant to provide facts on equal footing. That is what makes good journalism, in my opinion. And I think you are definitely right in how the bias is presented. Although, bias through emphasis is a pretty strong bias. And a really great way to avoid being cornered as producing false information. In my opinion, that's one of the reasons it has gotten so bad.

I still have a lot of mixed feelings here. Non Comcast new office highrises are a rarity and in that context this is great. But the design is ho hum and I would be prefer to see something much taller at that location. Could be worse those, like that thing on Market Street where IBX's twin was supposed to go. Oof.

New Venice Island development with....wait for it... underground parking! This is one of the more insane things I've seen recently. Hope whoever moves there isn't too attached to their car.

Mediocre architecturally and underwhelming in scale, but because it fills in a super embarrassing parking lot in the middle of the CBD--a big win.

It's heartening to see Center City's surface lots continue to bite the dust one by one. Keep it coming!

Lol. Or maybe they’ll finally build up a sufficient levee in Manayunk.

I actually think Venice Island and the canal is awesome and an underrated natural feature in the city. It stinks the Fairmount Waterworks waterfall blocks the ability to boat up and down the river. A water taxi from Manayunk to Center City would be awesome.

I think this is a better thread to have this discussion, than the crime thread, but why do we think this area has not redeveloped more?

you got the river, the universities near by, you got the zoo, fairmount park to the north, nice looking old housing stock, none the less, the massive growth in university city as a jobs hub. But really the whole area seems to be near stagnate. We see these big apartment buildings being built out on Lehigh Ave. in North Philly, and other much further out places, but not here. Why? I don't get it. I think of places like Francisville and Old Kensington and it's just surprising to me that a block like 5th and Cecil B would gentrify first.
