When Owens has something to actually write about, he's a much better editorial writer. This is a good article.
Again, that wasn't commentary, it was reporting. That story fell into the category of "profile," with further reporting on the state of unionism in the city today.

(Though I will allow that the use of the word "editorial" to refer to all the people who write for a publication, whether or not they voice opinions, causes confusion.)

But thanks for making my point about Owens for me. He is fair in his reporting and highly opinionated when expressing his opinion.

I know what you are saying. Owens should keep his opinions to himself and stick to reporting?

I wouldn't say that. He's entitled to his opinion, and if someone's willing to pay him to voice it, why not take the money if writing (or speaking) is what he wants to do? (And I know that he wants to do that as much as I do.)

He should just be prepared to get lots of blowback if his opinions are unpopular, rankle people or stir things up. (And I'd say that all three terms apply to all his criticism at varying times and to varying degrees.) What I'm less certain of is his ability to handle criticism gracefully. Now, having said that, it seems the tendency of many today is to deliver criticism gracelessly.

I will also say this about his reporting on the LGBTQ community here: By focusing heavily on racism within it, he did open up some cans of worms that needed to be opened. The new committee that revived the Pride March made some missteps of its own in organizing and publicizing the parade, but they moved to correct those mistakes when people called them out on them. Edited to add: And I think Owens deserves some credit for setting in motion the events that led to the sudden vaporization of Philly Pride Presents.

At the end of the day, he is entitled to his opinion. And as much as I disagree with his fervor for a topic like this, I also recognize that he comes from a different place than me. If you disliked his opinion so much, avoid reading opinion pieces by him. I personally would be open to reading other things by him, be they reports or opinions.

You guys are taking my comment too seriously. Of course he's entitled to his opinion. But oftentimes, his opinion sucks. And it's not just a matter of it being unpopular. It's often elitist, narcissistic, and hypocritical. But that's just me voicing my opinion.

You read and respond to plenty of things that you don't like. You should consider taking your own advice.

You said he should stop writing opinion pieces. I don’t say that to others just because I disagree with them.

I asked a question. Read it again.

If you had to “ask” that, then there’s nothing more to say.

You all are nicer than me when it comes to him, lol.

The bold plays into why I think he is a terrible person. I've never heard a positive thing from those that have met him. And in many ways he represents what is wrong with the gay community - Holier than thou, standoffish, snobby, judgmental, unwelcoming, elitist, etc. While his expose of racist tendencies in the community was good, his actions toward many are bad.

But sure, he is a good reporter... I'll leave it at that.
