I am thinking about moving to Philly from Chicago to be closer to friends and family. How is the job market in Philly right now? Specifically in IT and Marketing?

I am thinking of doing the same. Grew up in NE Pennsylvania then moved to southern California 30 years ago. Temporarily living in FL with relatives have been unemployed for 2 years from residential construction. Hope to move to the Philly area as well to be close to friends and family as well.

Philadelphia itself is not doing well, we've been hovering at 11% reported and nearly 20% "unreported" for quite some time. The metro area is lower but encompasses areas as diverse as Wilmington, De, Vineland, NJ and King of Prussia, PA. The unemployment rate for the metro area is been holding near 9% for the past several months. The DC area is doing much better, in the neighborhood of 5% unemployment. You'll have more employment options there. A job in the Maryland suburbs north of DC would put you within a 2 hour drive of the Philly area.

I agree that one may have a better chance of finding work in the north/northwestern suburbs - e.g. King of Prussia, Plymouth Meeting, Horsham - than the city itself. If you have experience with banks, Wilmington would be good to look into as well.

One caution about DC from a current resident: while it's true the job market here is holding up well, the cost of living is such that one may have to live a lot further out than one would like (especially if buying a home) or else find roommates (particularly if looking for an apartment). Most IT jobs are on the VA side towards Dulles Airport.

EDIT: I now see this is an old thread but the topic and information thus far are still relevant.

The job market in the city is bad. Unless you have connections or at least a bachelors degree, its' difficult to get anything legal thats better than low wage service jobs. The burbs definitley have a stronger job market at the moment, but they too are dominated by low wage service jobs. Even the service jobs seem to be getting pickier by the day.
