I know that if you try saying "Frisco" in front of a native San Franciscan, they get extremely upset, so I was wondering about Philadelphians and the use of "Philly".
"Philly" is fine, especially if you're attaching a neighborhood name to it ("West Philly," etc.). Writing "Philli" or some variation is just goofy looking, though. Having spent time here, you'll have probably noticed by now that it's hard to get our noses to wrinkle at pretty much anything, much less how you say the name of the city. And yes, you can get the seemingly laid-back west coast folks wrinkled, if not worse, by using "Frisco." I used the term once and got the proverbial "who farted?" look in reply.

I don't think so, not that many Philadelphians can spell Philadelphia anyway. Using Philly avoids embarrassment

Agreed...

I grew up in Philadelphia, and we'd refer to it as Northeast Philly or the Northeast/Far Northeast, but I've never heard anyone simply use "West" or "North" or "South". It's always West Philly, North Philly or South Philly.

Philadelphia is a city with a split personality. Even down to the name. I always thought Philly sounded more down to earth and hip while Philadelphia sounded classy and melodic.

That's exactly how I've always thought of it. I've always thought of Philly as being representative of the people and of certain characteristics and Philadelphia as being representative of the place itself and everything it has to offer, its history, and everything else along those lines.

Yes people have used that as far as I can remember..
For example.. " We're headed to a frat party up North."
" Word?" Well I'm headed to an event out West."
" Where, over at Penn or Drexel's hall?"
