My husband and I are thinking of moving to Philly, (we lived in Philly for 4 years, but did not live in a really nice area)
He is disabled (wheelchair) and we dont drive...We are in our late 50's...
We would like to buy an affordable home 50K or 60K...close to grocery stores, etc...
We also have a grandson (19) that is starting College, and needs to be close to a public transportation line...

What area's would you suggest?
zip codes please...we would love to live in a safe area that is mixed races.... white, hispanic and African American is a great balance

Hope this is not a tall order

I can only think of one area that would pass the "safe" test where you can buy a house for 50K That is 19134 and I believe it is considered Port Richmond. Make no mistake, it is a poor neighborhood and it isn't pretty. The narrow streets are tightly packed with ugly row houses but there is very little in the way of abandoned housing. The population is very approxamitly 34,000 white, 8,000 black and 18,000 Hispanic. The key is to find somthing close to Aramingo Ave which is lined with big box stores like Wallmart, target, Lowes, KMart, Home Depot, Shoprite, Pathmark, lots of fast food, chain drug stores, buses to get back and forth etc. Run that zip on Find Real Estate, Homes for Sale & Houses for Rent on REALTOR.com - Realtor.com®
Any other area with houses that inexpensive would be considered "ghetto" unless I have overlooked something.

I agree with bryson.

$50-$60K is very little to pay for house nowadays ... about one-quarter to one-fifth the price of a average middle-class home in America. Trailers and "manufactured homes" in trailer parks (an option you might consider!) cost almost that much!

If your budget was $100k I would also suggest some of better parts of West Philly, like West Powelton Village, or the fringes of University City.
