Wagner's Ballroom was the oldest dancing ballroom in the country. Founded by my great-grandfather Professor Harry D. Wagner in 1893. It started down off of South Street near where Larry Fine grew up. He taught dancing and etiquette. It then moved to on top of Wilkie Buick until around the mid 50's then to the old Grange movie theater at Broad and Grange. As the country changed my father couldn't and he sold the ballroom. It was an institution in Philadelphia and a lot of people met there and spent or are spending their lives together. As the only living survivor of the Smith family I wish only good memories of a time gone by and a smile in your heart.

I found an old hand bill in my grandfather's stuff that advertised a dance party there back in October 20th of 1920. It was for the Wagner Dancing Academy and dancing would be to Charles Gey's Orchestra. They even advertised prizes for the best comic costume and best male and female impersonators. Must have been quite a fun place. It was indeed on 1750 N. Broad Street. Other than that I don't know of the history. I was searching for some background on the place when I found your postings.

Default wagners ball room

The address for Wagners is Old York Rd. I didn't think Broad Street ended there but It was not at Broad and Olney, the PTC now Septa station and a small restaurant is on that corner, it is a few blocks north and it looks like it is a day care now

The Facebook site of the Bromley theater says that it became Wagner's ballroom in the 1960s. The hand bill I have is from 1920 so it must be a completely different Wagner's ballroom which was on Broad St.
