I'm considering a job transfer and I would be working right in Central Philly, near Independence Park. I know nothing about Philadelphia neighborhoods and even less about getting around. I'd be interested in a decent 1-2 bed apart. in a community/neighborhood that has some shops and things to do. Schools aren't an issue as it's just me. Ideally I'd like to use SEPTA as much as possible. Any and all advice would be most welcome. Thanks!

What is your preferred budget?

Independence Park is basically in the heart of Center City (what we call "downtown") and there are numerous cultural, retail and nightlife options within its two square miles as well as in many surrounding communities. You could probably walk to a lot of places but SEPTA offers enough bus, light rail and subway options to get you there even faster. Of course, the "catch" is that rent will be higher here than most everywhere else in the city proper, all things equal. So that's where your budget will come into play.

If you are working near the MFL stop then you have a lot of options for places to live. You could also live near south street / whole foods and just walk to work.

Unless you are looking to have roommates I don't recommend paying premium for an empty second bedroom. The most connected part of philly is near city hall which isn't too hard to get nearby fairly cheap.

Default Central City

Thanks guys. I like the idea of Central City a lot. Budget would be $1200 to $1500 for an apartment of my own, maybe with some extra room for friends/family to visit.

Though born mostly an urbanite on the west coast, I've always had cars. I'd really like to downsize and live as local as possible. I like the idea of being a little greener and getting out on foot/bike in a neighborhood these days. Not to mention the cost savings and headache reduction of a car in the city.

We just came back from a visit (planning a move there in a few years) and stayed in Washington Park West. It was fantastic and had everything you mentioned; great shops and restaurants, trendy, clean, attractive, and you could walk to Independence Park (although the bus runs there as well).

We checked rents when we came back home and found many things in your budget.
