We do not welcome outsiders; especially those who threaten to open our city to the outside world. I have seen since I was 14 project after project stalled, sabotaged and outright rejected. How in the world do you manage to run Donald Trump out of your city? Our waterfront is pitiful; except for that darling Walmart over there. There is literally nothing for tourists to do here; especially for families. In fact, this city just ran Steve Wynn out of town after unveiling a world class resort so impressive that the "Casino Free Philly" crowd got behind it. How do you do that? This city deliberately shuns any prospect of foreigners having any say here, and thats the way its going to be. By the way, Boston is definitely a Global city along with Miami and D.C. Philly is on par with Cleveland, Pittsburg, New Orleans, and Baltimore.
Frankly, I'm thrilled the Trump project failed or was a no-starter. Trump is a scumbag/racist. But, fwiw, his son-in-law and daughter, afaik, own the Piazza at Schmitts property in Northern Liberties now. So he's somewhere in the background I'm sure.

Some of what you say is true, in that there is a mentality here that makes it hard for change to occur. But even local developers face tremendous resistance to certain ideas.

I find this statement "There is literally nothing for tourists to do here; especially for families" perplexing.

And, if Steve Wynn feels like he had no chance because he's an outsider, then I think he should come out and say that. There's nothing any city politician could do to him to hurt him (except to deny his project, which has already happened).
The poster has never spent a second, I bet, in the Visitors' Center at 6th and Market with its array of stuff/suggestions to do wrt tourist families.

Steve Wynn, like Trump, are Penn alums so I guess they may think that allows them some reason to try and " connect" to Phila. Wynn tried twice to enter the casino market here. First with trying to fix the Foxwoods mess and, later, when that license became available again. He bailed both times. I really wonder he bothered at all.

Completely agree. Philadelphia is MUCH better off without a project from either Trump or Wynn. These are businessmen who have literally no interest/vision in improving the communities in which they build -- only to make a quick buck. Not to mention, their hideous casinos would have no doubt created another eyesore to rectify in the long-term (see Atlantic City). That's the last thing Philadelphia needs.

The whole notion of a casino making a city world class is about the most laughable thing I've ever heard. Philadelphia deserves far better and has far more potential than falling for these "get rich quick" schemes.

I don't know how much weight I would put on a New York Times ranking, but U.S. Census data ranks Philadelphia as 13th in cities visited by overseas travelers; we're a little above Flagstaff AZ. For a poster who said bringing an entertainment/casino sector to the city would be a mistake; consider Las Vegas is ranked 6th in overseas tourism, and attracted nearly 4x as many tourists as Philly. Steve Wynn and Donald Trumps plans were in line with a Global initiative for this region to capture a NYC and D.C. tourism demographic. Philadelphia would dwarf Las Vegas in tourism dollars, and with a solid core of amenities would skyrocket this city to global status. Wynns proposal included world class retail and dining, waterfront development and a 1st class resort.

I'm a Penn student, and plan to leave this region like many of my classmates because of this type of shortsightedness. This city is extremely hostile toward innovative thinkers. At Its core, I think this city is extremely provincial and cater more to their blue collar constituents than a true initiative to expand this economy.

1) You need to show the whole story and not just a snippet to satisfy your agenda:
As you can see Philadelphia, although at 13 is Well within/above its peer cities:
10 Boston
11 San Diego
12 Houston
13 Philadelphia
14 Atlanta
15 Grand Canyon
16 Anaheim (DisneyLand)
17 Seattle
18 Tampa+ (Western Florida)
19 Dallas
20 San Jose, CA (Monterey Peninsula)

2) Your hypothesis appears to be in conflict with the now under construction tallest skyscraper in the city : The Comcast Innovation and Technology Center. It's actually amazing that a Penn student would even make the statement "This city is extremely hostile toward innovative thinkers", unless of course the individual's experience/education is in an area of little value to the community.

Explain "what nothing to do" means to you?

I can find plenty to do: music, dance, theater, museums, most art house movies come here(a BIG plus for me), so many restaurants I can't get to them all, walking tours( I love architecture), all the historical things when I want to visit them, shopping when I want to spend money, awesome coffee when I can get to the cool La Colombe coffee house on Frankford Ave. And that's just a short sample.

You completely missed the point of my post, which was a satirical response to a previous post by the OP.
