One day is not enough to knock out a decent amount of stuff in the city, there's just way too much to do. I'd maybe sign up for a tour of some sort so they can take you to all the major sights.

From Philly, both DC and NYC are easily accessible via Amtrak, DC being about a 1.5hr ride. I wouldn't suggest driving to either city, since both have pretty decent mass transit and parking will be rough.

With such a short trip, I don't know if you want to spend precious time commuting four hours (or more, if driving) roundtrip to another city when there are *plenty* of fun and romantic options to consider in Philly itself.

NYC, well, I don't even have to tell you about that place.

DC is fun, but I think you can benefit more from Philly than DC, unless you want to do some boring tourism stuff. I can tell you, Lincoln and Jefferson memorial is really something though.
PLEASE leave out the Italian Market as a recommendation. It's a shell of it's former self and technically it's more so, the " Italian- Mexican- Cambodian Market " these days.

It may be different than what it was but I have found that out of town guests really enjoy visiting it.

Agreed. The setting is very unique to the US and is fun for visitors. Plus, there are still some great places to frequent like Lorenzo's, Anthony's, DiBrunos, etc.

Thanks for all the advice everyone and we agreed to spend the entire Thursday evening to Sunday morning in Philly. Any recommendations on a spot for a romantic dinner? Thanks again.

A couple of thoughts

Amis
Budakan
Parc (actually a better brunch place really)
Amada

so many though - if you want to venture further go to Le Virtue on Passyunk or really a ton of different BYOs which can be very romantic

grab a drink at nineteen

for V-day you probably want to make reservations well ahead of time - Vday is a Saturday so a double whammy

Really? I'm surprised, because it used to be much bigger and bustling daily. I went this past summer and it was nearly deserted, and kinda dirty, but if people like it then by all means let them enjoy.

Anyway, I agree that the OP should stay for two full days if he's short on time.
