We will be in Philadelphia for the first time in October. We know about the cheese steaks but were wondering where the local people go for pizza. We'll be staying at the Alexander Inn at 12th and Spruce. Any suggestions welcome.

Depends on what type of pizza you like. Check these out, but be sure to do your homework, because each has its quirks.

Gennaro's Tomato Pie
Pizza Brain
Taconnelis
Pizzeria Beddia
Pizzeria Vetri
Brigantessa
Lorenzo and Sons
Lorenzos at the Italian Market

Lived on 24th & Spruce for 3 years, always went to Gusto on 22nd & Locust rather than Mama Palma's.

First off, I would like to welcome you in advance to Philadelphia! I think that you'll really enjoy our city.

Secondly, here is a list of 5 pizza places that have really blown my mind in Philly:

-Luigi's Pizza Fresca: 24th and Fairmount, Art Museum area
-Francoluigi's Pizzeria: 13th and Tasker, East Passyunk, South Philly
-NYPD Pizza: 11th Street between Sansom and Walnut, Gayborhood ("Midtown Village"), Center City
-Lorenzo and Sons Pizza: 3rd and South, Society Hill, Center City
-Fame's Famous Pizza: 12th and Polett Walk, campus of Temple University, North Philadelphia

Additionally, if you find yourself outside of Philly, Leandro's Pizza House in Upper Darby is really good. If you need further suggestions in Delaware County, I'm your guy!

Again, welcome to Philly! Hope you'll enjoy it!

Well, the "best" pizza is impossible to define, because it depends so much on your personal preferences. Do you favor thin crust? Thick crust? Deep dish? Sicilian?

But we have tremendous options all over, especially in South Philly. A few best bets:

Pizzeria Stella, 2nd & Lombard--very classy, Stephen Starr thin crust place
Birra, 12th & Passyunk--thinner crust with amazing exotic flavors (ever had a mac 'n cheese pizza?)
Slice, 17th & Sansom--carmelized onion, bacon and goat cheese pizza is great.
Santucci's, 10th & Christian--"the works" is a loaded-up, square Sicilian style to die for.

Also second Brigantessa, since it's about as close to actual "Italian" pizza you'll find around here.

I like many of the above suggestions. I especially like Tacconellis, Pizza Brain, and Lorenzos (best as an end of the night slice). I didn't think Beddia was that great when I tried it but that's just my opinion and pizza is subjective.

I also really like Stogie Joes pizza on east passyunk and the flatbreads at Earth Bread and Brewery in Mt. Airy.

Love Francoluigi's. I'm about a block away and it's a great by-the-slice place. Their slices are better than their full pies IMO.

I completely respect everyone's opinion, and I like how you call-out specific pies. I just haven't warmed up to Birra and Slice. I really don't like Slice's dough, but I've never tried bacon and goat cheese pizza. Thanks for the tip.

I do like Pizzeria Stella though. Good call!

I like Ponticelli's in Levittown. Not in Philly itself, but pretty close.
