I love, love, love living in University City! Rent is close to $900 for 1BR with good landlord at 43rd/Spruce. A piece of unsolicited advice...do some major research on all potential landlords. I got lucky with mine, which seems to be a rarity in the city. Oh, and move-in requires 3 months rent: first and last month's, with one month security deposit. That little tidbit surprised me when I started my search. Bon chance!

I considered moving in that area but didn't want to depend on the slow 42 bus. If u drive I guess it's fine living in that area.

Is the 34 trolley unreliable? There's also the 21 and 30 running down Chestnut into CC.

Yes the 34 trolley is reliable but I wouldn't want to depend on the 21 or 42 when going to work.

I frequently use the trolley or the 40, 21 or 42 to get across to CC. Market-Frankfurt Line is super quick to get across town. Usually no problem with arriving when I want to no matter which line I choose, provided I plan in reverse. Trolley is a faster option during rush hour, since it is underground. I am happily car-free in Philly. Easy access to Zip Car or Enterprise Car Share when needing to make Ikea, Target, or other large shopping runs.

More good stuff: Farmer's Market at Clark Park every Saturday, Shakespeare in the Park, University City Arts League Chili Bowl (and Ice Cream Bowl), and Honest Tom's Taco Shop Breakfast Burritos.

I have lost interest in the 21 bus because it's slow, always crowded, and smells awful. That was not the case 6 years ago.
