Yes! Walking westward on Fairmount Ave, with the PMA right in front of you, puts you on Kelly Drive which is in the park.

Here is a profile on Spring Garden:

OP, I've lived in SG since 1995 and it's gone through quite a revival in that time. And I second what rowhomecity says: look in Fairmount, Spring Garden and, another area, Francisville.

Most of the new development is going on right now in SG and Francisville. Francisville is the next neighborhood north of SG. It borders are Fairmount Ave(south), Girard Ave(north), Corinthian Ave or 20th St(west) and
Broad St(east).

You will still be fairly close to Fairmount Park.

Let me add, however, that while you should see how close you can get to the subway, you shouldn't shun a location you like because it's on a bus line instead.

Especially in Fairmount, which is close enough to Center City that your bus ride won't be all that long.

If your work will take you to University City instead, for the time being, that's inconvenient, but SEPTA has in the works a new bus route that will connect Strawberry Mansion and University City via Fairmount - and the west edge of Center City, IIRC.

You should familiarize yourself with septa.org.

SEPTA, south eastern PA transit authority, is the transit agency in philly and PA suburbs. Septa also has a commuter train that goes to Wilmington, DE.

There's also PATCO which has trains between Center City and Lindenwold, NJ.

And NJ Transit.

Going through a part of Brewerytown, I suppose.
