My son and I are landing in Philadelphia at 7:30AM and plan on spending the day there before taking the train to D.C.

I have a tour booked so that we can see the historic places and after that, we want to go to the Independence Seaport and see the ship Olympia, take the ferry across the river to see the USS New Jersey. My son is into war planes and ships right now so I thought he'd like to see them.

Can anyone tell me about the Navy Yard? Is it worth going to see the ships there?

Thanks!

None of the mothballed ships at the remnant Philadelphia Naval Shipyard are open for public tours. He could tour the Navy Yard grounds and see the ships moored in their basin, but that's it.

Thanks, I figured we couldn't tour the Navy Yard ships but I think it would still be fun for him to see so many together.

My son wants to collect patches of the ships he's seen and/or toured, so he could get patches for all the ones he sees at the Navy Yard.

Does the Navy Yard have specific hours to tour their grounds?

The Navy Yard grounds are open to the public from sunrise to sunset, according to information on the Navy Yard website. The mothballed ships are parked in the Reserve Basin, which sits just inside the main gate on South Broad Street.

I don't believe that guided tours of any Navy Yard sites or properties are available, but there's an interactive map on the website that gives you information about the historic sites, businesses and eateries located there.

Thank you!! We have to at the USS New Jersey no later than 4 (hopefully we'll get there sooner) so that is our top priority. Hoping we can make time to get to the Navy Yard!
