Is temple athletics a big deal here?

Like how packed is the football stadium during games?

Or is PSU the college team of eastern PA?

Temple sports, in particular football, are NOT a big deal in Philadelphia. The Owls are lucky if they get 20,000 fans for their football games. There are more Penn State football fans in the Philadelphia area than Temple football fans. Basketball is a much higher profile (and supported) sport at Temple, though even with hoops Temple's attendance (for men's basketball) is disappointing a lot of the time. There definitely isn't the amount of fervor among Temple basketball fans as there is among Villanova, St. Joe's, or even Penn basketball fans. In contrast to football, very few people in the Philadelphia care about Penn State basketball; most people follow one or more of the Big Five (or more accurately City Six) teams - La Salle, Penn, St. Joseph's, Temple, Villanova, or Drexel.

There's plenty of 'fervor' among Temple basketball fans. Football, not so much, but that's changing.

For football, we had 18,000 for the UConn game, 18,000 for Western Michigan, 19,000 for Ohio U., so our attendance wasn't too bad.

The Penn State fans are a joke. Most of them are high school drop outs with no connection to the school.

^^^

haha that is funny, it seems like Pennsylvania has the best college football atmosphere in the Northeast corridor

also how many PSU fans are at the rose bowl right now?

I know that they outnumbered the FSU fans at the orange bowl not so long ago

Temple football is at least fortunate to have access to the Eagles' Lincoln Financial Field. Having 18K show up to their games is a big step for them indeed.

JHG, are you sure you're not confusing a bunch of "feeling no pain" alumni with "high school dropouts"..?

Penn State is smack in the middle of the state. However, because college football hasn't had much success on the national level in recent years, Penn State does get a lot of press in the Philadelphia area at least. Temple, Penn and Villanova get their fair share of coverage, though.

Temple doesn't get the local love. Penn State does. Temple's football team is horrible and their basketball team teases fans with the constant highs and lows.

No. Penn State fans by and large are high school dropouts from Nowheresville, PA.

Also, we get absolutely no local coverage.

Horrible? I wouldn't call a knocked down hailmary away from being in the MAC Championship horrible. I wouldn't call the best return team in the NCAA horrible. I wouldn't call allowing fer points per game than Miami, Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Oregon State, Georgia, LSU, Oklahoma State and UCLA horrible.

We were a few bad bounces away from being 9-3 at worst...

I'm a Big Five fan and support all the Philly teams (including Drexel). I've been to home games for each of the 6 teams in the last 5 years, including St. Joe's at the Fieldhouse and Villanova at the Pavilion. Based on my observations, Temple basketball does not have the intensity of support that Villanova or St. Joe's have or probably Penn has. That's not to say there aren't a lot of people who care about Temple basketball because there are. However, the level of passion/support among Temple basketball fans is clearly lower than it is for Villanova, St. Joe's, and probably Penn.

P.S. I also follow Temple football, but not at the level I follow Temple basketball.

I disagree, but regardless, who cares? None of the schools have the support that top teams have anyway.

i really do not think Temple should field a Division-1 football team. i do not think one student is drawn to Temple by the opportunity to root for a team that has not been to a Bowl since i think it was 1979. Even with the sweetheart deal they got to use the LInc they can not consistently draw 20,000. Temple should have gotten the message when the Big East got rid of them.
