Check out Estrella in the west valley. Welcome : Home Page | Estrella | Goodyear, AZ It is the closest thing you are going to find. It is not a small town but does a fairly credible job of offering the illusion of one.

We came from Mich and are in Fountain Hills, little town with beautiful scenery. You would like it if you want a small town feel. We pay 650 for a for a 1200 sq ft condo, no pool though I would check it out...

Chandler is connected to Mesa, Tempe, and Phoenix but it still felt like a small town when I lived there.

Try a site like movingtoaz.com. Wish there had been information like this when we made the move over 20 years ago.

I guess it depends on how small "small town" you want. But Buckeye, Surprise, parts of Goodyear come to mind right away in the west valley. Mostly, you want to live near the outskirts to find "small town" life.

I don't know how far an acceptable commute is, but New River and Black Canyon City are both to the north and are reasonably close. Black Canyon City is about 40 miles north of downtown and New River is less. Anyway, both are seemingly more remote than some suburbs I've seen mentioned here. Instead of Phoenix you should give a more precise area. Is it a suburb of Phoenix, like Chandler, Glendale or Tempe? Is it downtown Phoenix? Because those cities are to the north it would make a commute to some areas incredibly long.
