The Arizona Humane Shelter is a good place to adopt a pet. The kitten you're looking for will have all their vaccinations already, plus they give you a bag of food, a collar, plus the first vet's visit free (you can choose from a number of locations for the vet's visit ), plus the pet is spayed/neutered and healthy, psychologically, too.
A microchip is extra, I think, but nominal.
Cost is around 50-70.00?? Not sure exactly, but that's not much for all you get. All senior pets are only 20.00. I think they're running a special on kittens now cuz they're so many of them.
They have a spaying/neutering program for those on Access, food stamps or other types of help--they go to their spaying clinic and get 70% off the already low cost. It amounts to very little. I saw it on TV--something new to keep the pet pop down more.

I paid $30 for a chip. Also, after the first free initial checkup, you get a 14 day window where if anything is found wrong they pay for it up to $500 or so.

Another source for a nice cat would be the rescue groups that are at the different Pet Smarts. I have seen some real sweethearts. I dont have any experience with them other than my daughter's little rescue dog.

You could just show up at the locations where they shoot those weird quasi-porn films where the girl in high heels stomps the kitty to death, and offer to buy it instead.

I second the humane society - they're cheaper than the rescue groups and they have hundreds to pick from at both shelters. Don't even bother looking online, the website can't keep up with the numbers of cats they have. Little bro was able to get 2 with a promo they had last year - it's nice to have littermates since they can keep each other company when you aren't around.

Adding a second cat later is hard, b/c cats are territorial

Found all kinds of deals on animals if you go to the Arizona Humane Society: 2 for 1 deals, Sr. citizen discounts and so forth. Thought some might be interested, so scroll down the page and see:

I'm glad I asked the Phoenix board as you guys have been lots of help!

Looks like there are two locations for the Arizona Human Society. Which has a better selection of kittys?
Sunnyslope or Campus for Compassion?

We checked them both out last time - I truly think we made it too hard on ourselves - they both had hundreds of sweet cats - go to whichever is closer to you - they'll let you spend a few minutes in a private room with any likely candidates. Take your time... spend a few hours and get just the right animal.

Unfortunately it means being a little bit hard-hearted - having had cats for most of my life I tend to look for shorthairs (they have a much easier time grooming themselves as they age+less hairballs) - I also look for a perfect "glossy" coat - the thin-haired (downy-coated) cats tend to get knots in their coats when they age.

You really can't beat an old fashioned DSH for overall health. Any breed with a "pushed in" nose is much more likely to develop sniffles + runny eyes.
