Hey guys....moving in about a week to Arizona from Hawaii. Hoping to move to the Phoenix area and then to Goodyear. How's the job situations there and are there any Filipinos in Goodyear?

Need more info what is your field cuz the job market here isnt that good. Also, Goodyear is at one extreme of the valley so depending on were you find work the commute could be pretty bad.

Why?

Admittedly, everyone I know in/from HI is or was military, but HI to AZ unless you have family here, I have not heard of.

If you think Arizona is mainly into construction industry, consider how dependent Hawaii is on tourism. Yes, IMO, Hawaii is the best place to live if you do not need a job. Tourism goes flat during economic downturns. Maybe the OP is looking for work that the mainland has and Hawaii does not have? I work with two young people who grew up in Hawaii but work in LA because they are engineers. Very few engineering jobs in paradise! Also don't forget the confiscatory income taxes in Hawaii.

Too often people see the Arizona glass as half empty and focus on the lost jobs in real estate and construction. Phoenix is large enough to absorb some of the shock of lost construction jobs.

Phoenix and Tucson together have bank/finance jobs, university jobs and defense jobs, as well as careers in health care. Here are numbers or employees I got off a web site for Arizona employees:

Largest Phoenix Employers - Largest Companies in Phoenix - Largest Arizona Employers

Company # of employees in Arizona

Wal-Mart: 30,000+
Banner Health 20,000+
Wells Fargo: 13,000+
Honeywell: 12,000+
Bashas Supermarkets: 10,000+
Apollo Group: 10,000+
Intel: 10,000+
US Airways 9,000+
Target: 9,000+
Freeport McMoRan 8,000+
JP Morgan Chase Co. 7,000+
American Express: 7,000+
Catholic Healthcare West 7,000+
Scottsdale Healthcare 6,000+
Pinnacle West Cap Corp 6,000+

From another web site:
Arizona’s Largest Employers
Raytheon 10,500+
Home Depot 9,600+
Kroger 9,300+
Phelps Dodge 5,300+

We moved from Oahu to Glendale, AZ (Phoenix suburb) to take a job at AMEX, about 5 years ago. Didn't mind the dry heat nor the temps as we originally moved to Hawaii from Texas....long story short, AZ is a nice state, with LOTS of major employers, as you can see from the list above. Just be prepared for the Monsoon Season, where it rains ALOT, and feeling like you need a shower when the dust kicks up, making you feel like sand. We actually found nothing special about AZ. Just about like every other state, except it lagged in Aloha. Good luck!
