Which areas do you have in mind? How can he "check them out" when you don't identify them? I'm curious myself-- there are some perhaps less desirable areas (one or two that I could think of) than the others in Tempe, but relatively speaking, they are not really bad, and they are also very small.

All cities or suburbs will have their "Bad" side. We just need to see how the geography is laid out in these places.

I'm not sure what your concern about "geography" is. Tempe is flat, and streets are pretty much laid out in a grid, though some neighborhoods have cul de sacs, etc.

More in how the houses are laid out, are they right on top of each other or are the lots decent size. How far are businesses from housing and schools. HOw many businesses are there in certain areas.

Ideally we'd like to find a place that has it's own lot (I have a boat and RV, plus a couple collector cars), close to GOOD schools, in a good neighborhood, and relatively close to a business district.

How the houses are laid out depends on the age of the neighborhood, etc. Some (both older and newer) are on larger lots, some are more dense. The whole city is fairly small in area, so nothing is very far from anything. What kind of "businesses" are you talking about? Places to work, or places to shop? While there's a downtown, like most suburbs, Tempe doesn't have a "business district" as such, although there are areas with more concentration of commercial property. Most of the schools in Tempe are quite good, as are most of the neighborhoods. It would be a bit harder (and more expensive) to find a place that will accommodate all your "toys" but not impossible. What is your price range???

We lived in Tempe when we first moved to the valley. We really liked it. A good neighborhood is the area bounded by McClintock, Guadalupe, Rural and Eliot - that is Kyrene elementary school district.
Another good, slightly more expensive area is south of Eliot between McClintock and Price.

I'd say we'll be in the 100K to 150K range to work with.

I saw the other topic that has North Phoneix one of the best places to live around there. Why so skewed?

Why so skewed? I guess I don't understand your question. I don't think that poll is very useful, because, for one thing "north Phoenix" is a very undefined term that includes lots of different areas (and school districts).

The AZ Republic says that the 85284 zip code is holding its value pretty well. The areas I mentioned are in that zip code!

I think that's true, Marian... I'm still in that ZIP code, and while things are down from the peak by a lot, as would be expected, they are still much better than a lot of other areas.
