I am mostly in the east part of the Valley and don't know much about Glendale, know nothing about Peoria, Buckeye, Goodyear, and so on. But I do know the Arcadia district of Phoenix has a lot of green areas with some of the tallest trees in the Phoenix area. There are some parts of southeast Glendale/Phoenix border areas that are similar. And of course the Scottsdale greenbelt lined with golf courses. My own apartment complex in the drier southeast Phoenix area is near a park and I'm fortunate to have a place right next to the park so that my back windows face it.

I've been to North Carolina a few times. There is no place in the Phoenix metro area as green as you are used to. But I do know I love the sunny days no matter what temperature.

OP, coming from Michigan oh-so-green-lake-living to sunny Arizona, I must agree with some posters that you will indeed see that the desert also has a beauty.

We've been here in Fountain Hills (which we personally favor due to the close proximity to shopping in Scottsdale and Phoenix...but enjoy coming home to serene hillside living at the base of the McDowell Mtns.) for over a year now, survived the much talked about hot summers...and staying put.

Our Spring has sprung and saguaros and Palo Verdes are simply stunning. Here's a pic of our blossoming season...

Personally, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the cities mentioned (Chandler, Anthem, Peoria, Gilbert, Surprise) I would say although homes are cheaper in Queen Creek and Maricopa they are far out and the school districts don't have as strong a reputation. Since I live in Chandler and still have a child in the school system I am biased. I love Chandler and think it's a family-oriented city. I moved here from Charlotte, NC and really did miss the greenery back East initially, but as one poster said eventually you will begin see the beauty and uniqueness of the desert. Let us know how things work out and good luck!
