What major gangs are there in the Glendale Peoria area? I have lived in the area all my life and have heard that there is a gang area at about 91st and olive. Is this true?

There's gangs everywhere. How much they impact any particular area, I can't say. If you've lived in an area for a length of time and only heard about gangs then I'd say you have little to worry about.

I used to live in that area for years and never really noticed. I'm sure they are around though.

The Northeast part of Glendale is nasty. Back in 1998-1999 I worked for the Alhambra School District as a Sub. The entire district was in Phoenix, except for one school, which was in Glendale. Nasty staff, nasty kids, nasty neighborhood. I red-lined them. Fast forward 12 years, one of my coworkers at my tutoring job, also Subs at Alhambra, and has tons of experience teaching in Phoenix. We compared notes, and both got a head shaking laugh. He won't go there either. Some things never change. That is the nastiest part of Northern Ave., too. Must be something in the water over there. We both actually liked the schools in Maryvale.

I'm sure there are gangs here and there all over the west valley, and all over the metropolitan area. Any sizeable city has them.

Try to live in a nicer, newer area, they usually have less of a gang presence and lower crime rates.

Otherwise if you know of any gangs just leave them alone and they will usually leave you alone, that's what I've always heard.

unless it's "initiation day." Part of their initiation may be to shoot, maim, or murder an innocent bystander. In Oakland, they did this thing where they would drive around at night with their lights off. When somebody said, "hey, your lights are off," they would open fire.

This is an old, mossy, urban legend. snopes.com: Flashing Headlights Gang Initiation

Sounds like Detroit too.

That could happen anywhere though especially in the larger cities, Phoenix is certainly not exempt from gang problems.

Don't gangs stay on their own streets and keep away from neighborhoods that are outside their turf?

LOL yeah hundreds or thousands of gang members who must be initiated, can you point me to all the news items regarding all these innocent bystanders who are shot, maimed, and murdered every year? I mean, usually a murder/shooting in Phoenix area gets a mention in the newspaper, what am I missing?

I don't doubt that gang-related crime that impacts innocent people exists, but come on.
