That's bordering on inhumane.

I'm an advocate for increased education but children and their families need a longer break, especially here. Too dang hot to begin in July or August.

Year-round schooling and limited summer breaks can lead to burnout.

Duh, my error. New teachers go back on the 11th. Returning teachers on the 18th and kids go in on Jul 25. Sorry....

Actually, as a parent, I really enjoyed the year round schedule! And to be honest, my kids didn't have a problem with it either. We scheduled our vacations around the 6-8 weeks they were off, so it wasn't an issue. They were bored and always ready to go back to school. It's too hot to do anything else, so they were happy to be with their friends. Having 2 weeks off in the fall and 2 weeks at spring allowed us to do extra vacations during the year too.

I also know the districts say the kids retain more with less time off and have to spend less time at the beginning reviewing.

It's not a bad system, just different. Lots of people don't like it until they have tried it for a year and then most love it. But of course, it's not for everyone. It's nice to have choices, isn't it?

Three months off is a long time. Many kids were bored and anxious to get back to school before that time was over. With more and more families with both parents working outside the home, child care arrangements are probably made easier by the shorter breaks.

I guess it takes geting used to, I'm just thinking back to my schooldays.

Things are a lot different here than my small Michigan hometown, we were content to have shorter breaks during the year and have that nice long summer break, even if we just stayed close to home and went to the lake.

Have you heard the Kidrock song called All Summer Long? A lot of the lyrics bring back memories of my summer breaks, maybe not as much drinking and fooling around though.

It is nice to have choices but where are the choices? It seems as though all the schools here start either in July or August anymore and not in September like they used to.

I know if I had a family I would want to take them on extended vacations to the fun parks in California or back home to upper Michigan in July and August just to get away from this heat for a while.

The exact time varied from year to year but it was always in June if I remember right.

I like the idea of year round school. I want more time during the cool time to take vacation. Kids sorta get ripped off of summer fun here in my opinion. I know they get to swim...but that seems to be it. What about all the exporing and bike riding , or playing ball...all too hot.

So how is August to May much different than September to June? .... it's pretty much just shifted a month

Typically the calendars out here go an extra week at most from other parts of the nation on the sept/june schedule .... that's about it

That's why the temperate Califorinia coast is just a quick flight or a half-day's drive away.

Lots of families like to take vacations to California and elsewhere in the summertime where it's cooler and there are more fun things to do.
