I was browsing Maricopa County HR webpage from out of state, and became interested. I'm sure being out of state reduced the chance of my application from being considered, but overall how competitive is it getting a county job in Arizona? Maybe I'll answer my own question by guessing that it's no different than anywhere else in U.S. under any economic condition.

It seems like Maricopa County is using furlough just like other local government and state government throughout the country, but is there any rumor of layoffs or attrition?

Also for someone who dislikes heat, is it possible to get used to Arizona desert heat over time?

Government hiring at the state, county and local level is still pretty tight. What your odds are depend on the same factors as for any job.

As far as adjusting to the heat there are many, perhaps too many, threads on that already. Obviously, millions of people manage to live with it. You may be like them, or you may not. It's not something anyone can predict. (If you "don't like heat" I'm not sure why you are even considering southern/central AZ)

Agree with Observer53. If they do call, one thing they will ask is, "Why do you want to move to AZ?"

Before that happens, make up your mind if you want to or not. Then have a good answer.
