Weare planning a trip to Scottsdale for the first 2 weeks of May 2012. Should large numbers of cacti be in bloom at that time? Thanks for any info. Harry

Generally speaking, the best blooms are in March and early April. I think they'll be past their peak for your visit.

Wildflowers may or may not be in bloom when you come. It depends on the amount of rain followed by sun. You know, the old "April Showers/May Flowers" thing. However, sometimes the showers come as early as January/February, and there is almost always abundant sunshine. First two weeks of May there's a possibility it will already be starting to get hot & flower displays drying up.

However, if you're talking about specific cacti, they have different blooming times that are more predictable. They bloom mostly from April through June. Check out the following link from the Arizona Sonoran-Desert Museum for some great info.

If one of your must-sees during your visit is desert flora, be sure to visit the Boyce Thompson Arboretum and/or the Desert Botanical garden.

What is name of that red flowering bush that is all over the valley especially by the expressways? I forgot the name of them. They are so pretty.

Bouganvillea is the flowering shrub you are thinking of. Wildflowers will likely be mostly gone by then, but cacti will be blooming.

Pretty much, except that they are frost sensitive, so if temps go below freezing for any length of time, then they freeze and lose the leaves/blooms, and then they come back in the spring. The ones on the freeways don't get cut back much, but people who have them at their homes often cut them back in the early spring after the threat of frost is gone.

May is the border of the 100 degree temps. Feb.,Mar. and Apr. are prime wildflower season.
