Good luck with that. I needed a rheumatologist who takes Medicare, but the few in Phoenix take 3-4 months to get an appointment. I found one in Tucson who took me in 2 days.

There's a 3-4 month wait for an appointment for several specialities in this area, no matter what insurance you have or even if you are paying cash. Especially if you want to see one of the more established physicians or a doctor who has been on the list of "Top Docs" in Phoenix Magazine.

Not looking for any type of specialist...just an ordinary family type doc who will take Medicare insurance.

Barb, believe it or not I actually found one on Angies list. I was surprised at all the reviews and the doc has worked well for me so far.

What doctor doesn't accept Medicare? Really, the only physicians I know that don't accept Medicare are plastic and some orthopedic surgeons. A lot of physicians don't accept Medicaid (AHCCCS) and some private insurance providers like Humana but nearly everyone accepts Medicare. I would just focus on finding a nice primary care physician because they are going to accept Medicare unless they are a concierge medicine doc who accepts cash only for their services and they are rare (less than 2% of all physicians in practice). Theoretically it's possible for a physician to not accept Medicare but this is assuming the overwhelming majority of their patient bases is less than 65 and the majority of a family medicine and internal medicine patients are going to be elderly and on Medicare.

I would recommend an Internal medicine doctor vs Family Practice because Internal Medicine specializes in adult medicine particularly for elderly patients who are on multiple medications. An Internal Medicine physician is more likely to accept Medicare too

Really. Alot of doctors don't accept Medicare. And some are accepting some plans and not others. And some are making patients pay a fee (around $1500) a year to keep seeing them, once they turn Medicare. Its not as easy as you would think. I had a wonderful PCP whom I loved. I begged him to keep seeing me but when I turned 65, he said "Sorry." Much of it has to do what Medicare pays them. Before you start a Medicare plan, its good to check out what docs are on your plan.

I agree barb, it's getting harder and harder to find medicare docs. Yes, there's lots of 'em out there but if you look for that little box that says "accepting new patients" many times it says no.
The other issue I'd found is once I did find a doc and get him trained then next thing I knew he'd moved on and I had to start over.

Wow that is really eye opening. I guess it must be different in the primary care world. For subspecialists like myself, we all accept Medicare because we really have no choice, they make up the majority of our patients.

The "1500 per year" to keep seeing them is concierge medicine. Medicare is really not that bad and they don't give you a hard time about reimbursement like private insurance and AHCCCS. But I suppose there is such a shortage of primary care that they can do that. Oh well, don't free, you are going to see a lot more primary care penetrating the Valley in the next 2-3 years. It's coming.
