Tonto Natural Bridge is a pretty cool place to stop and check out the surroundings.

It's over 3 million acres so it's hard to recommend a trail or spot. Check out their web site.

Take the Apache Trail scenic drive to Lake Roosevelt. It's a pretty drive.

Tonto National Forest covers a huge area. You can hike in it as close as Usery Mountain Park ($6 per car). The Wind Cave trail head is in the park but the trail soon leaves the park to enter the NF. Saguaro Lake is nice. You don't need a Tonto Pass ($5, buy before you leave metro Phoenix) at the marina but you do elsewhere.
If you just want to see it, for an easier drive than the Apache Trail, drive up the Beeline Highway (Rt 87). You will go in and out of the forest.

If you're looking for a nice, relatively easy trail, try the Peralta Trail to Fremont Saddle in the Superstitions. When you get to the saddle, you'll have a pretty view of Weaver's Needle and a good spot for a picnic before heading back.

It was my first trail out there and still my favorite dayhike in that area.
