I'm considering Sedona or Scottsdale but really want to live in a community that offers the most, based on a senior citizen's needs; that is a safe place to walk around in the evening, opportunities for meeting others in my age bracket, perhaps not as hot in the summer as other AZ towns, close to a town with good restaurants and LOTS of Thrift Shops (my idea of having fun).

Sun Cities, Sun Lakes area would be best in Phoenix area. For a little cooler try Rio Rico or Green Valley areas south of Tucson.

I don't know what Sedona or Scottsdale have to offer for senior citizens; however, I think both areas are beautiful.

The places I do know about for senior citizens that I would recommend are all in the NW valley of Phoenix. Trilogy at Vistancia, Sun City, Sun City West, Sun City Grand, and Sun City Festival. Sun City is the oldest of these, but completely developed. Trilogy at Vistancia and Sun City Festival are the newest and very beautiful. Sun City Festival is so new that a lot needs to be developed yet and it is the farthest from Phoenix (other side of the White Tank Mountains).

ibarrio, great point.

ConeyIsBabe, you can drive a golf cart in all of the areas I recommended. Unsure about being able to drive a golf cart in Ponderosa's area recommendations?

I appreciate all these responses so far (I don't play golf). I did a search for Sun City and at 6:47 pm the temp in Sun City is 100 degrees............ UMmmmmmmmmmmmmm, I don't think that's for me (LOL). But thanks for those suggestions. Is that typical for summer temps in AZ?

Have you ever heard of Arizona before? Yes, that's typical. We have had our hottest summer yet with over 30 days of 110+ degree days. And yes, it stays HOT until late, usually 100 until 10pm.

Default Retiree in AZ

We have a lot of Senior Citizen relatives who live in the Prescott and Prescott Valley area. They seem to love it up there. We visit here and there. It can still get a little toasty in the summer but nothing like Phoenix. They also commute to Phoenix for major issues like certain medical specialty care or just to visit the rest of us and they don't seem to complain about the drive which is approximately an hour to an hour and a half depending on where you need to go in Phoenix.

I also have a few friends who live in Munds Park which is between Sedona and Flagstaff. It is very beautiful there and there are a lot of retirees. A lot of people walk at all times of day there. There are a ton of thrift stores too in both Sedona and Flagstaff. There are also plenty of restaurants to choose from in both cities.
