Hello all. Having a pool installed soon and was wondering about the effectiveness of an ozone filtering system. Anyone have one? Pros and cons. Thanks in advance

I have had one on my pool for about 10 years. Whether it works or not is debatable. I will say that for 10 years I never had a problem with my pool, until late last year when I had an algae problem. Turns out my Ozone generator was not working (bulb went out). Could be a coincidence.

I do know that many municipal water plants use them to help purify water, so there must be something to it. They are expensive $400-600 or more. But there are relatively maintenance free, you just have to check to see if it is working every so often.

My understanding is that an ozone generator is a supplemental oxidizer and not a primary sanitizer, so I don't know if it really does anything more to sanitize than chlorine already does. Also, I remember reading that ozone destroys chlorine so you'll need to use more chlorine, rather than less, with an ozone generator.

From what I understand, ozone is really only worthwhile for pools with a very high bather load, i.e. public pools.

Here is a great site for maintaining your pool.

It's simplicity at it's best and your local pool store is NOT your friend in most cases.
