I own a 5 acre piece of raw desert land that currently has creosote bushes and empty desert trails and areas with no vegetation. I would like to add more standing vegetative cover (i.e., vegetation that is attached (rooted) with a predominant vertical orientation to these empty dirt trails. Don't care about looks and want something that's maintenance free, cheap and needs no water (except for initial sprouting). It can even be weeds, but they probably won't hold up to high winds. What plants, bushes etc would you all recommend?

I wouldn't want too much grass, or weed type vegetation because I worry about fires. I even own a fire escape ladder since I currently live in TX which had a HUGE fire not too long ago.

I don't know of anything that would cover much ground that could get by only on rain water. I know you are trying to keep dust down, but I don't think ground cover planting will work.

I got some good suggestions from this website regarding shrubs that need very low water. Brittle-bush, Creosote, Senna and Golden Eye seem like good choices to me.

There are plenty of shrubs. I thought you were asking about "ground cover" which is a whole different thing. My bad. I don't know how much bushes will help with your dust problem over a five acre lot.

Does anyone know who sells creosote, brittle bush and other low water use plant seeds?

I found a resource for seeds in the Valley and calculated that I need 99 1lb bags of creosote/brittle bush seed to fill the lot and that it would cost about $3200. Ouch! Not a very inexpensive way to help the environment and keep the dust down.
