The Scandinavian stores make the trip to Minnesota fun in the summer. Not much else here and my family is BIG into the Norwegian heritage, so think they would have found it.
I have heard AJ's sometimes sells lefse. Unfortunately, I haven't found it there yet. I'll keep trying though. Lutefisk I can live without.

I'm sure you are right. If they haven't found anything else, it probably doesn't exist. Thanks so much for re-affirming the AJ tip for me.

Lol! I do love me some IKEA. I grew up in Belgium, and our occasional trips to IKEA were some fun times for a kid! It was quite different in Europe in the 80s though.

I wish there were some Scandinavian markets around. I have more Danish heritage than anything else, and I really love the Scandinavian clean style and food. We took a trip to Denmark when my grandma came to visit (she's 100% Danish), and it was so beautiful and fun! We went to Legoland (the original). Anyway, I would love to see some more Scandinavian stores pop up. Maybe you should open a store, AZAnnie

Yeah! I do enjoy IKEA! Thanks vegaspilgrim. They have wonderful Swedish Meatballs there. At least they did when I was last there. I like their ideas for rooms, and their kitchen gadgets are fun to go through. I always seem to find at least one item I just can't live without.

I really like IKEA too. At one time I worked right across the street from the one in WA. and I would go there and browse once in a while. I was very happy when they said they would be building here and we went shortly after they opened.

You grew up in Belgium! That is very interesting. I'd like to hear about the culture some time. What you did as a child growing up there etc. I've never been there. Denmark either. Some day maybe.

I have mostly Norwegian in me. Mom's 100%, and from Dad I am pretty much a mutt! Would love to visit Norway some day and see my relatives there. Several have come to the states for visits and I really enjoyed talking with them about their culture. Many things were the same as with us, because of where we lived.

Although I would love to see a Scandinavian market open up in the Phoenix Metro area, I wouldn't open one myself. I don't think there are enough of us Scandihoovians around to make a go of it. Although during snowbird season there probably is since so many are from Washington and Minnesota (two states heavily populated with Scandinavians). Maybe a booth in one of the Swap Meets in Goodyear or Mesa would work, because I could close it once the snowbirds leave. Importing items could be very expensive though, for such a risky business adventure.

There were lots of little Scandinavian cities and towns in WA, and an area in Seattle Metro named Ballard and often called "Snoose Junction". That is actually where I was born and spent the first half (or so) of my childhood. Then we moved from there to another Scandinavian community, which is why I miss the culture and all that goes with it so much (I think they liked to bunch all of us Norwegians and descendents together in certain locations, to make sure we didn't force feed any lutefisk to anyone). Actually I think they just didn't get our humor, or should I say lack thereof. There was an importer up there that did a lot of business, but then again there were a lot of customers up there. I bought a really nice Devold sweater from him once. Problem is, it never gets cold enough here to wear it. I bring it with me when I visit WA. and it's one of my layers against the cold. So now you know why I started the thread. You can wake up now!!!! Have a good one!

Oh, I had a lot of great experiences growing up in Europe (being able to travel a lot and all the history, and being bilingual from the age of 3 years old), and some not so fun experiences (school, that I was an American, a foreigner), but overall, it was great. I'd have to write a novel to describe any more to you

Your experiences sound interesting as well

Beaver Choice is a great place. If the o.p. is still around she should check it out.
