My family is from AZ (although mostly from northern AZ, although I live away) so I'm pretty familiar with the state. I'm visiting in a week or so to visit a college girlfriend who lives in the valley, and I'm looking for ideas of stuff to do that's not terribly far away. Moderate drives are just fine. I have a few days and we're both outdoorsy (I hunt and fish and backpack, not afraid of places off the beaten path). Ideas so far are things like:
-hike around the rim
-fossil creek (is the road open?)
-tonto nat'l bridge

Any input? I sure appreciate the help.

You can get to Fossil Creek via Strawberry. Park at the trailhead, it's about a 3 mile hike down to the water.

If you don't mind something different and are not afraid of the dark, check out the Lava Tube Caves up near Flagstaff - a mile-long underground tunnel formed by lava: Coconino National Forest Recreation - Lava River Cave

The Parson's Spring trail is also lovely and a nice respite from the heat, if you don't mind a longer hike. The creek is nice: Coconino National Forest - Parsons Trail 23144

I'd never really considered Tuscon as a destination. Is it very different from Phoenix?

Kartchner Caverns just past Tucson are a couple of cool caves -

Arizona State Parks: Kartchner Caverns: Home

And the Tonto Cliff Dwellings or Montezuma's Castle are interesting. The Tonto dwellings are smaller, but you can get inside via a short trail.

Slide Rock in Sedona is really fun, and a great way to escape the heat.

Tucson isn't exactly what I'd call a "destination" either. But they do have some great restaurants.
