This winter I'm planning on moving to Phoenix Az from northern California. I would like to know what areas in AZ are safe to live in within Phoenix. Are there areas to avoid as a female, and what areas should I be looking for employment and housing. All suggestions are welcomed and appreciated. Also, I keep hearing about the fiddle back spider in Arizona, should I be concerned?

There are MANY safe areas in Phoenix proper and in the metro area, for females and everyone else. Have you visited here before? If so, how much, and when?

Find the job first, then look for housing convenient to your work, to avoid long commutes. I don't know what you mean or what you "keep hearing" about "fiddle back" spider, perhaps that's another name for brown recluse, which has a violin shaped mark on it. Not something to be concerned about. If you are asking about black widow spiders, basically the same answer.

What field(s) of employment are you looking at? Can't really tell you where to look without more info.

My picks would be Gilbert and Chandler, however, as the previous poster said, find your job first and then decide on where you want to live and how long of a commute you would be willing to accept.

I would avoid south Phoenix and parts of Mesa, I live in Ahwatukee foothills and it is safe and beautiful.

Yes, please provide more information. Gilbert and Chandler are great choices if you want more of a suburb feel or have kids. If you don't you may not want to get near those neighborhoods and want a safe neighborhood close to nightlife so it's hard for us to advise you without knowing what you want out of a neighborhood and job location.

I'll be attending nursing school in the Phoenix Az and I'm planning to work in the hospitals as a CNA. I'll be moving from northern CA. I'll be looking to rent a room in the greater Phoenix area. I'm a single female late 20's no children, and my primary focus will be studying. From my understanding traffic will be a concerened, the college is Phoenix Westside.

There're a lot of safe neighborhoods in the West Valley as well - you don't have to restrict yourself to the East Valley. There tends to be more East Valley folks on this forum & they always say "move to Gilbert". That's not practical if you are working on the West Side. Can you supply the address of the school & say which hospitals? The Westside of the Phoenix metro area is huge! Also, what type of housing - you can get a modern single family home in a quiet neighborhood for not much more than an apartment, if you'd like a yard and less neighbor noise. And what is your rent budget? Or do you want to find a room-mate situation?
